Establishment
In view of the enhanced importance attached to development, conservation and use of natural resources like water and land, Government of Karnataka has established several useful institutions Water And Land Management Institute Dharwad is one such institution in the State. WALMI was established under World Bank assistance by Karnataka Government on 28.05.1985 at Bheemarayanagudi to train staff of Irrigation, Agriculture Departments and CADAs. The Institute was registered as Society called ‘WALMI Society’ on 16 June, 1986 under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960 [Registration No. 74/86-87. The institute was shifted to from Bheemarayanagudi to Belgaum during November 1985 and subsequently to Dharwad during April 1986 in view of certain advantages like communication, education and expertise and land at in Dharwad.
The Institution aims to achieve the following:
- Increased system efficiency
- Increased productivity of water and land resources
- Maximizing agricultural production in command areas of irrigation projects
- Minimizing gap between irrigation potential created and potential utilized
